19 Oct Preparing for Your Child’s First Dental Appointment
Even though “baby teeth” will eventually fall out to leave room for adult teeth, they are extremely important for your child’s development. From the very first baby tooth that erupts, through to the transition to adult teeth, and beyond, we at Little Pearls Dentistry for Kids will remain the reliable foundation for your child’s oral wellness. It all starts with that first visit, and we want to help you make sure that it goes perfectly. After all, the better the experience is, the more likely he or she is to feel optimistic about future appointments. And that makes things easier on her or him, and on you.
When Do I Schedule My Baby’s First Dental Appointment?
When it comes to “baby teeth” parents often think that professional dental care is not needed. However, this is far from the case. Your child’s baby teeth are there to help them eat properly, speak properly and nourish themselves. Research has also shown that the health of baby teeth may also impact the health of our permanent teeth and how they erupt. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children have their first dental appointment once their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday. That way, we can craft a dental plan that will help them earn a healthy smile that lasts for life. We want to make visiting the pediatric dentist fun, and easy for your child.
What To Expect During Your Child’s First Visit
As you prepare your child for their first dental visit, you may begin to wonder what you can expect during their appointment. The first dental visit is often very brief and gives your child an opportunity to meet their dentist in a friendly, non-threatening way. This helps get them acquainted and can help calm your child before their dental exam.
During your child’s first appointment at Little Pearls Dentistry for Kids our main goal is to become acquainted with your little one and build trust. Depending upon the age of your child, their first visit may consist of:
- Dental Examination – Your pediatric dentist, will thoroughly examine your child’s mouth for any signs of decay, disease or dental issues.
- Dental Imaging – If any issues are noticed, dental radiographs (x-rays) may be recommended for further diagnostics.
- Dental Cleaning – Depending on the age of your child and their oral development we may also recommend a dental cleaning where any debris, plaque or bacteria will be thoroughly removed to prevent decay or disease.
- Fluoride Application – Fluoride may also be applied to help strengthen your child’s teeth and prevent any decay from occurring.
These appointments are also an excellent opportunity for us to share information with you about proper oral care as your child’s smile develops. If you have any questions about your child’s oral hygiene routine, this is a perfect time to ask! We’ll be happy to discuss strategies to help soothe your baby during the teething phase, answer questions about oral habits such as thumb sucking, or share tips about a smile-healthy diet. After their visit is complete, your pediatric dentist will suggest a schedule of follow-up visits based on the unique needs of your child.
